Today is the main market day of the town which spreads from the pedestrian high street up onto Broad Street, and Red Lion Square, with an array of bargains to be found for everyone.
Following our pick-ups we head directly and arrive late morning in Stamford, the bustling prosperous market town with its quaint streets and Georgian architecture, proclaimed by Sir Walter Scott as “the finest stone town I England” and declared a conservation area in 1967 with over 600 listed buildings of mellow limestone including five medieval churches. A thriving high street with coffee shops, restaurants and a vast range of retailers. Named as having one of the best high streets in the country in 2023. If antiques are your taste, then the adjoining area of St Martins Without is only a short walk away over the town bridge. With plenty of tea shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants to enjoy morning refreshment or lunch. Or maybe opt for a family picnic on the meadows. Where you can always feed the ducks and purchase ice cream.
Stamford has an array of history from Roman, Viking and the medieval periods right through to the modern day. With endless remaining medieval and Victorian buildings, including churches, a former castle, remains of the town walls, once home to two railway stations, many coaching Inns, hidden passages, Baths, three monasteries, one nunnery, cattle market, several hospitals and alms houses,
We depart late afternoon and make our return journey making our drop offs enroute arriving back in Lincoln early evening.
