In the Somme area, we explore some of the villages, several military memorials of WW1 and pay our respect to the fallen heroes of the Great War at the British war cemeteries Ovillers Military Cemetery, Pozieres Memorial, Tank Corps Memorial, Thiepval Memorial and Etaples British Cemetery.
Day 1.
We pick up our passenger’s early morning and head to our breakfast stop before making our way to Folkestone, where we join our crossing via the shuttle to Calais. We travel through northern France to the Opal coast, arriving late afternoon at the four-star Regina hotel in the seaside town of Berck. We spend 4 nights here with dinner and breakfast included. Located very close to the relaxing seafront, long sandy beaches and the town centre. Evening dinner includes ¼ bottle of wine.
Day 2.
We take a journey through the unique Opal Coast region to the town of Boulogne where we spend the morning exploring the old town. This charming elevated medieval walled city, rich in Napoleonic history, featuring 13th-century ramparts, cobblestone streets, and historic landmarks like the 12th-century UNESCO World heritage site Belfrey and the Basilica of Notre Dame. The 13th-century castle Chateau-Musee, and the central square surrounded by charming cafes, restaurants, and shops, perfect for some morning refreshment. We spend lunch and the afternoon in the lower modern town, located around the historic port, famous as France’s largest fishing port. A popular tourist destination featuring the massive Nausica National Sea Centre aquarium, Vibrant fish market and excellent seafood restaurants. As well as many other eateries to suit all, attractions, shopping areas and sandy beaches. We visit the chocolaterie Beussent-Lachelle where we see the production in the making and an opportunity to purchase. We return to our hotel late afternoon. With a chance to unwind and enjoy a drink in the hotel bar and lounge before dinner. ¼ bottle of wine included.
Day 3.
Today we take a drive into the Somme area, we explore some of the villages, several military memorials of WW1 and pay our respect to the fallen heroes of the Great War at the British war cemeteries of WW1. Our visits today include Lochnagar Crater, Ovillers Military Cemetery, Pozieres Memorial, Tank Corps Memorial, Thiepval Memorial the largest Commonwealth war memorial in the world, commemorating over 72,000 missing British and South African soldiers with no known grave. Etaples British Cemetery, the largest Commission cemetery in France. We return to our hotel late afternoon. Dinner this evening includes ¼ bottle of wine.
Day 4.
Today we visit La Couplole. Among the most impressive remnants of the Second World War in Europe. It’s overwhelming size, the subterranean nature of its installations, and the suffering of the forced mainly Jewish labourers, who built it make it a symbolic site of Nazi oppression. A WW2 bunkered based for Nazi V rockets fired at England. And the foundations for the modern-day space race between Russia and the USA that we know of today. We return to the hotel mid-afternoon, with some free time to explore the seaside town of Berck. Dinner includes ¼ bottle of wine.
Day 5.
We depart and our hotel as we make our return journey home via the shuttle, with meal and comfort stops enroute. Returning to Lincoln late evening.
Regina Hotel has a lift to all floors, modern comfortable rooms with ensuite. Located a few minutes’ walk from the seafront. Bar and lounge area. Evening dinner included ¼ bottle of wine per night, choice of red, white or rose.
Use of the hotel wellness centre is not included; however, we have negotiated a large, discounted access fee of €10pp per day.
